Why Pre-Vacation Cleaning Matters

Coming home from vacation to a dirty house is one of the most deflating experiences. Spending 30-60 minutes cleaning before you leave means you come home to a fresh, welcoming space. The Pre-Vacation Cleaning Checklist

Kitchen: Empty and clean refrigerator of perishables, run the dishwasher and put dishes away, wipe counters, take out all trash and recycling, run the garbage disposal with ice and citrus. Bathrooms: Flush toilets and leave lids up to prevent ring stains, clean all surfaces, empty bathroom trash. Bedrooms: Strip beds and wash bedding (you will want clean sheets when you return), vacuum floors. Living areas: Vacuum and tidy, close curtains to prevent sun fading.

Home Protection While Away

Set thermostat to 78-80 degrees in summer to prevent humidity issues without wasting energy. Set a few lights on timers for security. Adjust HVAC to run occasionally — in NC's humidity, a completely inactive HVAC system allows moisture to build up and potentially cause mold issues within days. Stop mail and newspaper delivery. Ask a neighbor to check on the house. Unplug unnecessary electronics to prevent power surge damage during NC's summer thunderstorms.
